TV Personality Samantha Bee Starts Campaign Against Trump

November 4, 2016 By Kevin Kopas Leave a Comment

TV host Samantha Bee had much to talk about after the controversial second American Presidential candidate’s debate. In particular, the Canadian-born TV personality took jab after jab at Republican candidate Donald Trump. She zeroed in on his misinformed statements regarding his ideas on the legalization of abortion.

In response to Donald Trump’s statements at the final presidential debate, Bee called him a ‘dick-waving Berlusconi knock-off”. For reference, Berlusconi was the president of Italy and well-known for his tax-fraud scandal.

Trump made many inaccurate statements regarding women’s abortions. In his world, an abortion is when “rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby.” Bee responded to this strange claim by Trump by saying “It sounds a lot like Trump has confused abortions with bear attacks. Removing a baby from the woman’s womb in the ninth month isn’t abortion,” she went on in a segment of her show “it’s a birth. And I’m sure Donald Trump would love to outlaw it. It makes the pussies too gross and screamy for grabbing.” Bee encouraged men across the country to log into their wives’ social media accounts and read first-hand survivor stories of women who have had abortions.

She also took aim at the debate’s moderator Chris Wallace. Wallace, a news anchor for Fox Broadcasting, confused the correct term for a late-term abortion, calling it instead a ‘partial abortion’.  Partial abortions are not medically possible, and Bee blatantly pointed out Wallace’s mistake.  “Chris Wallace confused partial-birth abortion, which doesn’t exist, with late-term abortion, which does — rarely.” The comedian went on to say, “Only 1.3 per cent of abortions take place at or after 21 weeks, and guess what? It’s not because women are selfish sluts who wake up in their third trimester and decide, “Not into this, I want a procasti-bortion.” It’s usually because the tests done at that point reveal a fatal birth defect or a serious risk to the mother’s life.”

She not only took jabs at Wallace and Trump but also the way the media has been covering Trump’s run for president. She mentioned that the current media is “punch drunk” from Trump’s “Hindenberg explosion” of a presidential candidacy. “They no longer notice how awful he is unless he hulks out on stage” she went on, “or grabs the foundational principles of our republic by the pussy.”

Bee is a strong defender of Hillary Clinton, in particular, her defense of women and their rights. Clinton is a strong campaigner for women taking control of their own bodies and their body’s health.

For her broadcast, she wore a t-shirt with the slogan “Nasty Woman”. This shirt is in reference to the last presidential debate, where Trump called Hillary Clinton a “nasty, nasty woman”. The phrase “nasty woman” has since been reclaimed by women across the country.

Samantha Bee is the host of hit talk show “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee”. The Canadian-American comedian is best known for her work as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”.

Adam West Promotes Kid-Friendly Batman Film

Adam West, star of the 1966 Batman television show, has spoken out about his opinions on recent Batman films. Calling them “too dark,” West’s comments come as he works to promote a Batman film that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

In a statement, West attributed the dark quality of the recent films to the characterization of Batman himself, stating that he “is very full of vengeance and has deep-seated angst.” His further comments seemed to indicate the theatricality and technology of recent film adaptions have overridden the original qualities of the Batman character.

“Enough violence,” he urged. “Let the costume work for you. And put a little humor into it.”

Based on these comments, West desires to bring the Batman character back down to earth, and that means making him accessible to kids. Since many parents likely have decided not to allow their children to see new Batman films due to their dark, violent nature, West wants to provide an option for these children.

West, 88, portrayed Batman as the “Caped Crusader” in the 60s Batman film and TV series. At this time, the show might have been a little campy, but it was loved both by children and adults. It included some humor and felt lighter overall in comparison to films such as The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Qualities of both animated and live-action films create vastly different experiences for a viewer, but producers portrayed Batman in significantly darker ways after West’s 60s version.

Essentially, West wants to offer kids a way to connect with the original Batman character. At Comic Con in New York, he mentioned that adults will enjoy the new film, but “this was done primarily for kids.” The film, titled Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, is rated PG, bringing all the charm of the original 60s show and movie and leaving behind the intensity of newer Batman portrayals.

While it may look like a 60s Batman show, West’s new film incorporates technology present now, such as space travel. With those updates, children will identify with and understand the new show, connecting to it easily. Parents can also rest assured that their children can view the program safely instead of having to make a labored decision over whether to allow their child to see the newest Batman film.

An official summary of the film hints that Batman will battle many of his worst foes—Catwoman, the Joker, Riddler, and Penguin—as they come together to try to defeat him, and therefore good as a whole. But Batman continues the legendary battle between good and evil by bringing order and justice to Gotham City.

Thanks to West, the collection of Batman stories will now hold a return to the simpler times of Batman’s character, offering a story told more in comic book style than modern drama.

Joining West and bringing even more nostalgia to the film, Julie Newmar portrays Catwoman and Burt Ward returns as Dick Grayson, just as they did in the 60s version.

Viewers of Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders will appreciate West’s drive to return to the kind, gentle, approachable Batman, instead of the brooding, dark version adults know today. Children especially will love the comic book Batman, dedicated as ever to justice and peace for Gotham City.

West offers not only a chance to revisit his beloved character but to offer something new: a Batman out of an earlier time and a story open to all.

Kim Kardashian Sues Website For Claiming She Faked Robbery

October 16, 2016 By Kevin Kopas Leave a Comment

Kim Kardashian fake robbery?

After being robbed of millions of dollars in jewelry at gunpoint, Kim Kardashian sued a celebrity gossip website for claiming that she faked the robbery. The website, called MediaTakeOut.com, argued that Kardashian was not actually robbed. Taking their story further, the site claimed that the insurance claims Kardashian filed after the robbery were fraudulent.

The robbery occurred on October 3 in Kardashian’s Paris apartment. Intruders held her at gunpoint and stole millions of dollars of jewelry from the residence. They also tied Kardashian up and gagged her during the invasion. Paris police confirmed their reports, establishing credibility for the robbery and showing that the website’s reports were false.

Lawsuit Details

The lawsuit revolves around accusations of libel, meaning a false statement was published about a person in order to damage that person’s reputation or appearance. The website in question allegedly portrayed Kardashian as a liar and thief in the wake of the robbery. Instead, Kardashian appears rightfully shaken by the events and seeks only to heal.

The ring Kardashian had just received from Kanye West stands among the list of valuables stolen. The diamond had been valued at $4 million dollars and measured 20 carats. While she had revealed the ring in an Instagram photograph prior to the robbery, Kardashian fights ideas that she flaunted the ring and somehow invited the attack. The website ignored Kardashian’s requests for the libelous words to be retracted and for an apology to be issued.

After the Attack: Healing Begins

After the robbery, Kardashian traveled back to the United States, meeting West after he canceled a concert. As of now, she focuses on healing and spending time with her family and close friends. Beyond the material loss of important, meaningful objects, Kardashian must work toward healing from the emotional trauma she incurred. Thankfully, some of the jewelry stolen has been returned after police investigation.

Since the robbery took place only about a week ago, Kardashian continues a break from work and a reflection on her social media practices. She desires to stay away from the media and off the grid, involved in communication limited only to close family. Many believe she will return to work as soon as possible, but her trauma requires appropriate time recovering.

Kardashian’s sister, Khloe, appeared on The Ellen Show on October 12, speaking out on behalf of the family. She shared that the family remains close, helping Kim process the event. She mentioned that fan support has meant a lot to the family and has helped the healing process. Admitting that Kim wasn’t doing well so far, Khloe seemed confident in the family’s ability to move beyond this current crisis.

As they work through this trauma, Kardashian and her family continue to fight allegations that the robbery was a hoax. They seek privacy at this time, and they work to reclaim the honest reported facts of the crime Kardashian lived through while traveling in Paris. Ultimately, it seems that the website claiming that Kardashian faked the robbery simply wished to enact harm on her and her family, as the robbery certainly occurred with Kardashian the central victim.

Caitlyn Jenner Banished to the Boy’s Room

Caitlyn Jenner and North Carolina Gubernatorial Debate

Photo Credit: Alberto Frank via Flickr

While the nation still reeled in shock over Sunday night’s presidential debate, a new controversy was brewing in North Carolina. In a debate between the two gubernatorial candidates, Republican Pat McCrory stated that Caitlyn Jenner would indeed be sent to the boy’s room in North Carolina.

The question posed to incumbent McCrory and his opponent state Attorney General Roy Cooper came from the debate moderator, Chuck Todd:

“Perhaps the most famous transgender person in the world right now is Caitlyn Jenner. What bathroom can she legally use in Charlotte?”

McCrory’s response was right in line with the state’s law mandating that individuals must use public restrooms that correspond with the gender stated on their birth certificate:

“In the private sector in North Carolina, she can go wherever the private sector wants her to, because we don’t want to be in the private business of the private sector. If she’s going to a shower facility at UNC Chapel Hill after running around the track, she’s gonna use the men’s shower.”

Activists for the LGBT community have stated that North Carolina’s HB2 Bill is the most discriminatory legislation directed at them in the entire country. Passed this past March with the help of McCrory, it states that transgender men and women must use a bathroom that matches the gender on their birth certificate in buildings that are owned by the government.

Private business have the option to enforce their own personal policies regarding the use of their bathrooms by transgender individuals. This gives them the legal right to deny a person admission into a restroom if that person is transgender and using the restroom that matches their gender identity.

This is a heated issue now in North Carolina, where millions of dollars have been lost due to retaliation from the public. The bill is also being challenged by the U.S. Department of Justice, and Democratic candidate Cooper is refusing to defend his state in the case. When given his turn to answer the question during the debate, he simply stated that “This is the problem, Chuck. We shouldn’t be getting involved in these issues.” If Cooper has his way, the law will be repealed.

Repealing the law cannot undo the damage that has already been done. Not only has the state lost revenue due to event cancellations, various organizations have gotten together to file a lawsuit against Governor McCrory over the passage of HB2. This includes the Human Rights Campaign, ACLU of North Carolina, and Lambda Legal. The backlash has been intense for the Governor and the entire state, and the remarks made about Caitlyn Jenner did nothing to help.

Ironically, due to the way in which the law has been written, Caitlyn Jenner is legally obligated to use restrooms designated for women when attending to her business in a public North Carolina bathroom. Since undergoing her transformation, the former Olympic champion has had her birth certificate changed and her gender is now noted as being female.

Cooper has gained a slight lead over McCrory after this debate, the second in a very close race. The third, and final, debate will be held on October 18th, less than one month before voters head to the polls.

JonBenet’s Killer Named by Team of Forensic Experts

October 5, 2016 By Kevin Kopas Leave a Comment

JonBenet's Killer and Team of Forensic ExpertsA team of forensic experts from around the globe have recently completed their investigation into the 1996 murder of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey in Colorado and named the probable killer as JonBenet’s brother, Burke.

It was a case that caught the attention of the world. JonBenet Ramsey was only six years old when her body was found in the basement of her parents’ mansion in Boulder, Colorado, the day after Christmas 1996. Twenty years later, her brutal murder still remains officially unsolved and controversial.

The team, brought in for a two-part documentary made for CBS, consisted of seven professionals who are prominent experts in their respective forensic fields. They each possess high-level qualifications and wide experience and have gained international respect and recognition. Their combined forensic analysis of JonBenet’s murder was in-depth. The crime scene was meticulously reconstructed using police photographs, and key pieces of evidence were scrutinized and subjected to modern scientific analysis. Included were the ransom note, 911 call, autopsy results, behavior of the remaining family members and legal process. The startling conclusion by the team, based upon evidentiary examination, was that JonBenet was killed by her brother, Burke, in an angry outburst. Their parents then united to cover up events by staging a crime scene.

Analysis of the ransom note established it was written by an educated, mature female who spoke English as a first language. It was concluded that the rambling, three-page ransom note was written by JonBenet’s mother, Patsy Ramsey. Most of the content was deemed superfluous and reflected a desperate and amateur effort to sell the staged crime. Basic words were deliberately spelled incorrectly, while more complex words were correctly spelled. It was concluded there was no sexual assault of the child, and the foreign DNA detected was transferred during the manufacture of underwear.

The intruder theory was looked at, and it was shown that a cobweb with accumulated dust and debris at the claimed point of entry was still intact in crime scene photos. The investigation concluded the crime was committed by a member of the Ramsey family within the home and not by any intruder, as strongly suggested by the subsequent staging. The child’s body was moved, and the crime scene heavily contaminated. John and Patsy Ramsey, who were affluent and influential, refused to cooperate with the police investigation. They did, however, give a CNN interview, which was scrutinized for behavioral clues. Taped interviews of Burke also caused alarm as he showed little interest and zero emotional involvement in his younger sister’s brutal murder.

Undigested plant material found within the victim’s digestive tract indicated that she had consumed pineapple just prior to death. A bowl of pineapple that showed Burke and Patsy’s fingerprints was in the kitchen. Burke claimed not to know what it was when shown a photograph. It was determined that circular marks on JonBenet’s body were not caused by a stun gun as claimed. The marks were consistent with the ends of a track for toy trains, which was found at the scene. The team demonstrated that the wound in the child’s skull was caused by a blow with a flashlight, which could be inflicted by a child of Burke’s age at the time of the crime. This would have resulted in brain death, but not clinical death. Asphyxiation using a garrote ensured she was dead.

Video footage of the child’s involvement in pageants brought public criticism of the parents for sexualizing a little girl and placing her in a setting which is attractive to pedophiles. This was viewed as exploiting and endangering a little girl who was subsequently murdered.

In conclusion, the team noted that Burke was displaced by the arrival of a beautiful little girl, and it appears there was resentment and jealousy that could have led to an outburst of anger and a fatal head wound. Whatever the concealed truth may be, the undisputed fact remains that a little girl lost her life on Christmas 1996.

American Horror Story: Links Between Roanoke and Murder House

October 4, 2016 By Kevin Kopas Leave a Comment

American Horror Story (AHS): Murder House

Image Credit: Alissa Walker via Wikipedia

As all “American Horror Story” (AHS) fans know, the show often features links between the seasons. Despite the time shifts, different settings and brand new characters that come with the seasons, the show still manages to create links and an interconnected AHS universe for its avid fans.

Linking a Diverse Universe

Each season has been so incredibly different that viewers didn’t know they were linked until a character from season two suddenly appeared in season four. Since then, the links have been showing up with more frequency. Now that we’re on season six, the teasers have shown numerous links to past seasons. In particular, the September 14 premiere of the current season shows strong links between it and the show’s opening season: “AHS: Murder House.”

Little Angel

The first connection between the two seasons could be spotted even before the new season premiered. In a creepy teaser trailer, a freaky doll with an extra-wide, slashed-apart mouth was shown repeating the same garbled line over and over again. Her angelic voice sounds like gibberish to a casual listener, but if you pay attention, and maybe even give it another listen or two, the doll appears to be repeating the words “little angel.”

The AHS fandom noticed soon afterward that this was a line from the “Murder House” season. Constance called her young grandson (who is also the Antichrist) “little angel.” He was only a toddler at the time. Is this an old toy he stole from a little girl in 2011 and somehow possessed in 2016?

Opening Shot Coincidences?

When the September 14 debut finally occurred, the “Roanoke” season premiere’s opening scene showed an upward view of the trees above the camera. Then the camera view came downward toward the old farmhouse in front of the trees. We saw almost the same thing in the “Murder House” season. The same kind of focus on the trees before the camera settles in on the infamous old Murder House can be seen in rerun.

Haunted Houses

As the premiere episode went on, we realized that we are dealing with a modern-day haunting. There are spooky, supernatural inhabitants lurking in the Roanoke home and outside property. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

It hearkens back to the “Murder House” days. We had the spooky old Murder House, full of history, and it just seemed to attract spooks and evil in its suburb of Los Angeles. It’s ghostly inhabitants, and later even the Antichrist himself, occupied that home. The Roanoke House seems to be the 2016 North Carolina version of that. We don’t know that the Antichrist has moved in, but it certainly would fit in with the number six theme for season six.

Celebrity Culture

And let’s not forget the acting/fame theme. In a completely different take from the other seasons, we are watching a show taking place within our usual horror show. A couple appearing on a reality TV documentary special called “My Roanoke Nightmare” give interviews about their encounters with the supernatural in Roanoke. Interspersed throughout the interviews are what look to be dramatic reenactments of what the couple describe.

Throughout the “Murder House” season, the consequences of pursuing fame and an acting career in treacherous Hollywood came up again and again. We saw Constance, Travis and the Black Dahlia struggle and suffer dire consequences as a result of their preoccupation with celebrity culture. Perhaps the Roanoke couple’s participation in “My Roanoke Nightmare” will also lead to consequences.

Victoria’s Secret “Inside Out” Launch Stirs Outrage

October 1, 2016 By Kevin Kopas Leave a Comment

Victoria's Secret Inside Out Launch

Sorbis / Shutterstock.com

Touted on their website as being “The New (Un)Dress Code,” Inside Out was a campaign slogan for a new line of lingerie. The photos used suggested that women show these sexy garments off, at home or out in public. This caused a public outcry against the company, which has not gotten this much criticism since the infamous “perfect body” incident.

“How to Get Fired”

Victoria’s Secret has since pulled the ads, but not before critics got a chance to voice their opinions online. Featuring their typical array of angels, the ad depicted women wearing various bras and negligees as the focal point for the ensemble. More than just a flash of a strap, it was suggesting that what women normally wear under their clothes – or under the sheets – could be an outward

Some of the images can still be seen here which prompted one shopper to comment “How to get fired by Victoria’s Secret.” Others suggested that the campaign must have been the idea of a man, and one commenter went as far as to say that the whole concept of wearing your underwear as outerwear was just dumb.

The ads are nowhere to be found on the Victoria’s Secret website now, suggesting that the lingerie legend takes its criticisms seriously. A habit it quickly developed after another public backlash back in 2014.

“The Perfect Body”

Known for their use of Barbie doll-like models, it came as no surprise when Victoria’s Secret lined up ten of them to advertise a new bra in November of 2014. Each wore a matching bra and panty set to highlight the various fits that the company offered. The picture was never an issue, but its overlaid message quickly became one. Written directly underneath this wall of angels was the phrase “The Perfect Body”.

While the smaller print made it clear that the lingerie the models were wearing was cut to fit any body type, thus the “perfect” part, the public did not see it that way. The majority felt that the ad was demeaning to women who did not fit in with that “perfect” body image, and a demand was made for Victoria’s Secret to pull the advertisement. They obliged, but only by changing the type to read “A Body For Every Body,” and using the same image of the ten models in underwear as the backdrop.

With stars like Amber Rose making women’s body issues a hot topic, companies are beginning to be more cautious with their branding campaigns. Victoria’s Secret may have made an error in judgement with “Inside Out,” but they were quick to respond to the public’s displeasure.

Pablo Escobar’s Son Jumps To Correct “Narcos” Series

September 29, 2016 By Kevin Kopas Leave a Comment

Narcos Netflix hit series

Sebastian Marroquin, now a 40-year-old architect, seeks to set the record straight about his father

The second season of Netflix’ hit series “Narcos” has been met with overwhelming public acclaim and rave reviews from critics for its deep look at one of Latin America’s darkest periods. However, praise has not been universal for the show, which is based on notorious drug-lord Pablo Escobar’s rise to power and subsequent downfall. Most notably, Escobar’s own son, the 40 year old architect Sebastian Marroquin, has recently posted a list of 28 mistakes the series made when portraying his father.

Getting The Details Right Matters, Says Son

“Narcos” had a successful first run in 2015, which depicted Pablo Escobar’s story from his origins as a petty smuggler, his rise as a ruthless cocaine exporter, all the way to his position as one of the richest men on Earth and his epic escape from prison. For its second season, launched Sept. 2, the plot follows the tense months of his life as an outlaw, the ongoing turf wars between cartels, and his family life – which was the toughest pill to swallow for Alberto Marroquin.

In a massively-shared Facebook post, Marroquin accused the show of being “insulting” and of containing more fact than fiction. As part of his statement, Marroquin said that he wished to honor his country’s real history and the victims of the rabid violence that overtook Colombia in between the ‘80s and the early ‘90s.

Many of the inaccuracies pointed out by Sebastian Marroquin are actually major plot points of the season, and as such, the show’s creators defend them as part of the challenge of creating an enticing, vibrant story that can keep audiences entertained while remaining true to the overall plot arc.

However, other seemingly minor details – such as Pablo Escobar’s favorite team, or the scenes depicting his wife carrying a gun – while seemingly irrelevant, were key to showing Escobar as a real person and proof that the scriptwriters were not committed to accuracy, Marroquin said.

In addition, Marroquin showed special indignation at the portrayal of many real-life honest characters as criminals. For example, Pablo Escobar’s brother-in-law Carlos Henao is depicted in several scenes as one of the chief lieutenant of his drug empire, when in reality he was “a doctor and an honest man who was never involved in anything illegal” and had apparently cut off all contact with Escobar.

A Bloody Legacy He Seeks To Escape

Although he admittedly loved his father, Sebastian Marroquin has never shied away from condemning his actions, business, and methods. He points out that other major plot points shown in Narcos, such as Escobar’s especially gruesome targeting of the police, were real.

Forced to escape Colombia immediately after his father’s death, under threats from the Cali cartel, Marroquin, his mother, and sister left for Argentina when he was just 17. Now an architect, writer, and advocate for drug reform, Marroquin has publicly and repeatedly apologized for his father’s crimes.
